A candle by any other name…

I have worn many hats in my life. A recent addition to the collection has me as bar staff at a function hall. It is a seasonal thing. The new season is starting up now, so I worked some weddings this weekend.

As you might imagine, there are many details that need attention to prepare for a wedding. Some of it is obviously done in advance, but there is much to do that has to be done just before the guests arrive. For instance, a common decoration for a wedding is candles. Adds ambience to the hall. Since the functions often take place at night, we will light the candles.

One of my coworkers was tasked to do this for our first wedding this weekend. We use butane candle lighters to make it easier. The candles come in varying sizes, and sometimes there are quite a few to light.

There were three matching large candles. She tried to light one and had difficulty. She tried several times and just could not get it lit. So thinking it was just a weird candle, she moved on to the next one.

Same problem. She simply could not light it. Tried just as hard as the first time. No luck. She figured third time was a charm, and made the attempt with the third candle.  As she was trying to light this candle, our boss walks by. Our hero comments to the boss: “These candles are hard to light!”

The boss was flabbergasted for a moment, and then pointed out that those particular candles were actually electric candles.

I’ll have to admit, you really need to admire her determination!
