Whether you believe in Climate Change or not (personally I have no doubt of its reality), it is pretty clear to anyone paying attention that recent weather patterns are definitely NOT par for the course. The seasons of late seem much less well-defined. I grew up in New England, which has always had the reputation of unstable weather, but at least we could tell what season we were in. These days it is winter one day and summer the next.

Because of this, and my own distemper of late, I am much less in touch with nature than I usually am, which reflects in my willingness to take PHOTOS of it. I have not been compelled to go on regular outings with my camera, as usually happens at this time of year. But that does not mean I have not taken ANY pictures. Here is a fairly random collection of recent photos I HAVE taken to welcome the seeming coming of summer.

Avian friends …

Floral friends …

Hanging with friends …

My parents have always had a special place for nature in their hearts. Wherever they have lived in the past there was sure to be a well-kept garden, as well as many an indoor plant. So it is no surprise that when my dad passed a few years ago, my mom planted a tree to enhance our memory of him. She chose a Japanese maple, a fairly young one with a lot of character. I am sure I have a few pictures of this pretty tree scattered throughout this site. Of course mom pays special attention to the tree’s care. Today, she noticed that tree was flowering … a little to her surprise. This is not something we have noticed in the past. It could be that we simply did not notice, or maybe the tree was just not mature enough before. In either case, it was worth getting the camera out … and it seemed the macro lens was called for. Enjoy!

Our house is part of a cluster housing condo community. Unlike the other houses we are set back a little (as can be seen in the many pictures I take around the house). That, combined with the constant supply of food provided by the house’s nature loving occupants, ensures we have quite a bit of wildlife visiting us. We have a family of robins who love to hang in the tree right outside our kitchen bay window. Sometimes I can almost get a view of the nest. Here are a quick couple of photos of mamma robin doing her thang. I might try for some better shots at some point, but I don’t want to disturb them too much. As can be seen in the photos, she was well aware of me being there.

Today is Earth Day 2017. It is a grey listless day … somehow seeming appropriate considering the growing danger to the earth that is humankind. We set aside ONE day out of 365 to honor the planet that shelters us; the planet that nourishes us; the planet that we are a part of, as if by honoring it for that one day we can be forgiven for the neglect and willful destruction that fill the rest of the days. There are those who always appreciate and honor; the ones who try to curb the damage … reverse it even if they are able. But in the face of the inherent greed and selfishness of the human animal … is it enough?

I live in suburbia. It is a mix of the man-made with a superficial respect for nature, making it seem as if we actually care while systematically destroying the environment. I take daily walks with my dog. More and more recently I see how our fear for the earth is in some ways unwarranted. The destruction we reap is more a danger to human “civilization” then the earth itself … for the earth will survive anything we can throw at it. Nature continues to thrive; to adapt,  even as we do our best to contain it. Humans like to think of themselves as the most adaptable of creatures, but in reality we do not adapt, we modify to suit our purposes. Nature DOES adapt, adjusting as it must to survive. The earth will be there long after humanity has destroyed itself (as seems the likeliest scenario these days). It may be a changed earth, with much that was altered by our interference … but the planet WILL survive even if WE don’t.

These simple images reflected these thoughts for me today. So in honor of the earth I share them.

My mother has always had a green thumb. Two really. Year round she has plants that she cares for, but spring has a special place in her heart. For as long as I can remember she has tended a garden. As she approaches the autumn of HER life, she tends to let the gardens shape themselves, becoming more of a caretaker than a designer. But in the past she planted with a plan in mind. Some 15 to 20 years ago she planted a patch of daffodils. Over time they slowly disappeared … except one that persistently grew back every year. It has been some time since it actually FLOWERED, but for whatever reason it has returned to full bloom this year:
