Should I be worried?

In a hike of 2200 miles, as one might imagine we are not just passing through a large amount of terrain, but also through a lot of history. The areas covered have witnessed much, from the growth and spreading of the indigenous people to the birth through adolescence of the nation we call the U. S. If we manage to survive our adolescence it may actually witness our adulthood as well. Each region has its claims to fame, its official history, and its folklore. And we will be very fortunate if we manage to directly encounter some of it.

Of course folklore also has a shadow side, with myths and monsters galore. We might not want to encounter some of the darker stories. One of the more common monsters of folklore, who’s infamy has spread throughout the domain covered and beyond, is the Wendigo. The Wendigo (there are many varieties of the name) mythology originated with the Algonquian peoples, the indigenous tribal communities that once populated much of the east coast of North America. It is universally described as cannibalistic being that has a never-ending hunger for human flesh. In some versions of the story, it grows every time it feeds, until it becomes a monster of gigantic proportions. It is said that humans can become possessed by Wendigo spirits, ultimately becoming one themselves.

Of course I don’t really believe these tales, and any of the more regional tales of mysterious creatures or happenings. I actually hope to learn more, because I find such folklore fascinating, and do believe that they at least have elements of truth in them. At the very least, they make great spooky campfire tales. But it never hurts keeping an open mind either. I would rather be called superstitious than find myself in the belly of a random scary critter. I have to admit though, that a recent photo that has made it about, reportedly that of a Wendigo, has me somewhat concerned. It is very clearly a disturbing creature, whatever it might be, and might leave even the stoutest heart skipping a beat. I will share it here and leave you all to your own judgement.
