I like to think I am a pretty smart guy. I like to think I "get" people. I like to think that I am filled with understanding about what makes people tick; what motivates them to do whatever it is they do.
Like I said I like to think that. Unfortunately I couldn’t be more wrong. There are some things about the thinking process of humans that just confuses the hell out of me. And here I thought BEING a human might actually instill some understanding of the human mind. Silly me!
Take obsessive fascination with sports. I just don’t get it.
Sure I get enjoying playing a sport. Even watching one. It is always a pleasure to see skilled folk using their skills. And even though some sports are of questionable entertainment in my eyes, especially to watch, I can appreciate others might feel differently. But what totally boggles my mind is how passionately some people follow and … well pretty much worship the players of their favorite sports. They might not remember their daughter’s birthday, hell it might even slip their mind they even have a daughter, but they will know the shoe size of the hairdresser of their favorite pitcher, or why he wears the same pair of socks for every home game … unwashed of course.
I don’t get it.
Of course maybe I am the weird one. What brought this thought process to mind was a chat conversation I had with my friend the other day. It went something like this:
Friend: How’s your day going?
Me: Just a day.
Friend: Mine just got better! Smoke just won again!!!
Me: Not sure what that actually means, but YAY?
Friend: Tony Stewart just won again.
Fortunately I am not so far gone that I did not know that Tony Stewart is a NASCAR driver, despite my personal ranking of NASCAR up there with Golf, Curling, and Underwater Basket Weaving.
Guess I just am too much the geek to properly appreciate sports.
Get involved!
