Day: 16 (ish)
Trail miles: 86.3
These tidbits apply to any situation where there is a heartbeat:
- Most importantly … hike your own hike!!
- One step at a time.
- Don’t look too far forward. It can provide hope, but might cause despair as well.
- Be aware of where you are.
- Take the time to look back occasionally, especially when you pause. That way you can truly appreciate what you have already accomplished.
- Take refreshment when you can. You don’t know when it will be available again.
- Trail Magic exists.
- What goes up, must come down (and visa versa).
- Complaining is pointless.
- Help is not a “four letter word”. Neither is give.
- Solitary does not mean alone.
- Man does NOT own nature.
- Time and distance are ultimately meaningless.
- To bear most of the weight on your hips, you must have hips.
- Paths are not always smooth just because you want them to be.
- What’s the hurry?
- Laugh!
- Enjoy!
Right now my Trail Name is Nameless. For every step I take changes me, so one name seems somehow insufficient.
I love this post for numerous reasons.
I am kind of proud of this one. Took me forever to get it posted though!
Are you still hiking with a partner, or are ya going alone at this point? Either way, you are doing great. Each step along in the trail takes you further than what 99.9% of us could possibly ever hope to accomplish. Keep steppin! 🙂
I am hiking in solitude, but not really alone. I go my own pace so who I may be with varies from moment to moment.
Great job! To be walking this trail, and still able to have some sense of humor (love the hips comment), that is truly amazing. Keep it up. And down. And up again. You will get there. We’re all cheering for you.
This trip would be just about impossible without a sense of humor 🙂
nice job, steve… you’re in no rush, right? If I’m around when you hit NH, I’ll buy you dinner! The Franconia Ridge Trail (from Liberty to Lafayette) is spectacular! I may even want to do that hike with you. I was on top of Lafayette when Jerry Garcia died, and didnt find out for 3 days when I came down. Keep up the posts, so I know when you’ll be up here! Lafayette Campground is right there too at the base, my favorite campground in the White Mts…
be safe, be strong, rock on!
Food always sounds good! Would be awesome if you could jump on for a couple of days too! I’ll do my best to keep folk updated as to my location and progress.
Thanks for posting Kramer. So glad to hear things are going well!!
It has been a grand adventure so far and I expect it will keep improving! Hope all is going well your way too.
I enjoyed the list that you posted. I’d like to know more about the “trail magic”, what’s that all about? Take care and stay warm as the temperatures begin to drop.
I’ll probably talk more about it, but Trail Magic is when locals go out of their way to support the hikers, usually with food.
“Time and distance are ultimately meaningless.”
Yes. Even in every day life, this is true, though there are some who will argue it is not. I rediscovered this truth while hiking last week.
To me this whole list applies to everyday life, in essence if not word for word.
This is great advise. You sound like you are happy and doing great!
There are rough spots, but so far a great adventure!
I’ve been behind on your posts. I’m sitting here today catching up.I LOVE this post!! Sounds like you’re doing good. Keep on hiking and Travel Well 🙂
Been the grand adventure so far. Not ALWAYS a good time, but the good definitely outweighs the bad.
